Exquisite Corpses!

5/7/2018

With our Spring Showcase quickly approaching it's fun to check in with the work our students' are preparing for the show!  Our Digital Design and 3D Modeling class is working on completing a group project before the deadline hits.  Have you ever heard of an Exquisite Corpse?

It is a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. Each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule… you are only allowed to see the end of what the previous person contributed.

Dada Artists invented this as a party game to play when they got together!  Dada or Dadaism was an art movement of the European avant-garde in the early 20th century.

The students of the Digital Design class had no previous experience with the Exquisite Corpse so before they got into animating one together, their teacher Ms. Emily Steffen decided they should break into groups and do a traditional Exquisite Corpse drawing in groups of 3.  The results turned out AMAZING and can be seen below!
For the Traditional Exquisite Corpse like this...A piece of paper is folded into three equal portions.  The top portion is to be the head of the corpse. The middle portion is to be the torso and the bottom is to be the legs.

For the head- You need to draw the head and neck.  You can even draw down to the beginning of the shoulders.  Stay within the boundaries of your section. When finished draw two guidelines to the torso section showing the next participant where to start the boundaries of their figure.  Then fold the paper over so the next participant cannot see the head you have drawn!

For the torso- use the guidelines the head left you and draw a torso down to the waist/beginning of the legs.  Stay within your boundary of your section. When you’re done draw two guidelines into the legs section showing where they should start the boundaries of their legs. Don't forget to fold the paper over in the end so the next participant can't see the previously drawn head and body!

For the legs- draw a complete set of legs to finish off the figure!  Once the legs are complete reveal the finished figure to everyone!

For the animated version of the exquisite corpse the students have been assigned an order.  Then they were tasked with creating the FINAL FRAME of their animation first, and passing it off to the person who comes after themselves in the line of the project.  That person then has to start their animation with the frame given to them, and transition from the previous subject into their own.  You'll be able to see the final version of their exquisite corpse complete with accompanying music at the Spring Showcase!  May 23-24!
