Drawing & Painting

In this intensive course, students will produce a portfolio through an exploration of observational drawing, abstraction of visual elements, use of various media, historical perspective, and critique. Though we are now in a virtual  setting, this environment allows students to sharpen their skills and receive one-on-one feedback about their artwork. Students will have a chance to pursue/concentrate their own path of painting and drawing inquiry based on these foundational experiences.

Students will work with high quality art supplies at home with technical and conceptual support and guidance from art professionals. This year we will use the power of the Internet to take virtual field trips and work with several visiting artists!

Upon completion of the course, students will receive college credit and walk away with a polished portfolio that is college-applications ready.

Drawing and Painting will be offered remotely for the 2020-2021 school year.

Meet The Teachers!

Meet Alex!
Alex Goldin is an artist and educator, painter and photographer, sketchbook enthusiast and occasional wood carver. He is a Chicago native and a former student of several after-school art programs, and got his BFA in Arts Education from UIC in 2008. He taught a variety of classes and has been a part of several different after school programs, including Marwen and After School Matters since 2009.

Meet Marjorie!
Marjorie Boyles lives and works in Chicago.
Marjorie makes Surrealistically tinged and compositionally dense paintings that draw from the historical movements of American Modernism and Abstract Expressionism.

Gestural bits of anatomy provide fleeting recognition, enough to form an uneasy sense of social location and identity.  Her art questions the place of reason, spirituality, and alienation in urban America.
Ms. Boyles practiced traditional painting techniques and art history at Indiana University, Bloomington, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting.  She has two advanced degrees: Masters of Art in Teaching specializing in Art Education from Columbia College and a Master of Fine Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
