Photography

This college-level course is designed for students who want to prepare photography portfolios for college credit as well as college admissions.  Students will learn how to use a camera and photographic lighting. They will also learn image generation, manipulation, editing and printing.

In addition to digital processes, film and alternative processes will be introduced giving students a more hands on experience. Students will explore their own personal visions and identities using the photographic medium throughout the course.  Students are encouraged to investigate themes of their own choosing related to their experiences.

A rich catalogue of artists and photographers will be looked at and discussed to enhance student learning.  An emphasis will be placed on trying new things, seeing differently, and not being afraid to fail.  The goal is for students to engage in photography as a true artistic medium.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

In Photography, students will...
  • Have access to the latest digital photography equipment and programming and have the space to learn about darkroom and analog photography techniques while applying their creative process.
  • Collaborate with other classes such as animation, culinary, and creative arts in our 2 week zine unit and explore the underground scene of zine culture.
  • Gain knowledge of many photography genres such as portraiture, landscape, documentary, still life, and abstract while developing professional skills that could lead towards a very prominent career as a photographer and artist.
  • Learn the vocabulary of an artist to help them think more critically about their work and put more intention into their photographs, especially through opportunities to share their work and receive feedback from both the professors and their peers.
  • Get the opportunity to view galleries, museums, and collections and experience the impactful work of photographers and artists in person.
